H-E-B Debuts New Food Labels On Shelves

Good-eating advocates have tasked companies with placing healthy food labels on their products. But while some high-profile businesses have seemingly ignored the calls to enhance their nutritional labeling policies, a couple grocers have assumed responsibility and affixed their own brand of healthy food labels to shelves in a bid to further educate consumers.

Such is the case at H-E-B locations in Texas and Mexico, as the grocer is now placing labels on shelves to help customers choose healthier foods.

Labels Highlight Key Areas Of Nutrition The new internally developed labels include shelf tags that displays icons that inform whether a particular food is heart-healthy, low in saturated fat, a good source of fiber, sugar-free, gluten-free or organic.

The initiative is part of H-E-B's continued focus on advancing customer service by helping them develop healthy eating habits.

"[The new labeling system] is really cool," Melissa Hafftervonheide told The Corpus Christie Caller. "I think it's a good time for them to do this. It makes it easier to shop and locate healthier foods without all the extra time."

H-E-B said its own healthy food labels had been approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
